What is dia del mar?

Dia del Mar, also known as the Day of the Sea, is a national holiday in Bolivia that is celebrated annually on March 23. It was established in 1952 to honor Bolivia's loss of its coastal territory to Chile during the War of the Pacific which occurred between 1879-1883.

The holiday is an opportunity for Bolivians to reflect on the country's history and territorial loss, as well as to express their desire for a peaceful resolution and return of access to the Pacific Ocean. Dia del Mar is a public holiday in Bolivia and is marked by parades, speeches, and other cultural events. Many schools and government offices are closed on this day.
